"I know, and they have a weird smell."
"Why do we even carry these? Nobody buys them."
"I don't know, I don't get it."
Okay what I was thinking was, "um, yeah, I'm buying them, and how could you NOT get it?" But what I said was, "actually, I just need a couple more, I love them!"
Do you ever have those moments where you feel like it is totally appropriate to use the phrase, "Hello, I'm standing right here; why are you talking about me as if I'm not in the room?" Yeah, strangely enough, that moment came for me this week at the grocery store. I have loved using my reusable grocery bags, but I didn't have quite enough. What I love, is that, in addition to not using plastic or paper bags, I don't need as many...they are better made, so you can fit more stuff in them so it's easier to take the groceries in. Also, they never fall apart, causing the apples to drop to the floor, and therefore the garbage because nobody wants a bruised apples.
So, neither my bagger, nor my cashier had seen anybody actually buying the reusable bags. I am definitely not a totally environmentally friendly granola chic, but I do think it's important to do quick easy things that not only help the world, but also help yourself. So, I ended talking about the negative effects of plastic bags and how much easier it is to use the reusable one. I also mentioned the various cities in the US that are following in the European footsteps and not even having plastic bags available. I probably left them thinking what a wacko I was in my perfectly streaked hair, obvious make-up, high heeled flip-flops, and sparkly shirt, but somehow concerned about not using plastic bags?! Like I said, it's small steps that make a difference.
The Ideal Bite is the Best Bite! This website is so cute, it's simply irresistable. Their website says, "Ideal Bite offers bite-sized ideas for light green living." You can sign up for daily emails to get the "Daily Tip," of just surf through them on the site. (One of their tips is to use reusable grocery bags, rather than the plastic ones at the store.)
You can of course purchase "Biter Bags," "Biter Tees," and other "Biter Gear," but the best part is that is has daily tips to becoming more green. Small steps.
You can buy reuasable bags at your local grocery store for about $1. If you don't like the style at one store, just buy them somewhere else, because there are some really awesome ones.

I really struggled this week to find the PERFECT bite post. I considered Twilight (and my other Vampire obsessions), perhaps a post about how I have been wanting to bite everyone's head off (well not so much that I want to, but it just happens), The Bite Of Seattle (it's great, but it's also not currently July), a whole tribute to Amuse Bouche (single bite taste sensation); I even considered just linking my mosquito bite post. Nothing was right, and this is why. It's truly time for an environmental moment.

Reuseable grocery bags are a fantastic idea, and one I think about often, but haven't done. After getting six kids in the car and to the store most often forgetting my wallet at home, I doubt I could remember the bags. Maybe I should get some and assign the task to one of the kids...

Nice write. Thanks for the link. I always use reusable grocery bags. And by the way, you don't have to use one that was meant for groceries. You can look through your closet or garage for a tote bag that's the right size. Just re-use what you already have...even better than buying something new!
I love my reuseable bags and I keep some in my car so that I don't forget them when I have to run to the store. Amazing how I can do a full week's worth of shopping and only need about 4 bags instead of 20 plastic ones!

Every time I go to the store I look at the bags and think that I need to get some - perhaps you have inspired me to do so!
Great post!! Good, green MM!
Yes, yes... I know i should use these ding dong bags. I do sometimes, but for me & my nomadic lifestyle, we haven't quite figured this one out yet. Don't get me wrong: boy do I have THOSE bags already! It's all about attitude really. Shortly this city I live in, well really outside the limits but still in king county & i work & drive & spend $$ all over city of seattle, will soon have a TAX if you DON'T bring your own bags. So when it's presented like that there's clearly a division when people are 'FORCED' to do something, or be taxed, and then people get nit picky. So good for you, babe!
