Everything's Going Weird Way

Yeah, I can't say that anything went wrong today, most of the day was actually pretty good; parts of it were...just weird.

1. Allie's lunchroom called to say that she needs to bring a dollar to school tomorrow to pay the lunch lady back. They said that she ate breakfast in the cafeteria, and didn't have any money in her account. BUT she also said that theystop serving breakfast at 8:00 and I personally dropped Allie off at 8:04 at the doors to her classroom. I walked her to class the first two days, but since her classroom door is literally 5 steps away from the doors at which I dropped her off, she thought it was "crazy" that moms come to the class with their kids. I have full confidence that she
a)did exactly as she said she did, which was walk straight in to her classroom and stay there until lunch (I saw her standing in front of classroom about to go in when the outside doors closed.)
b)did not eat breakfast at school before 8am, since she was not in that location at that time.
It's not about the dollar, but identity theft at only 5 years old??? lol

2. Okay, not so weird, but the new jeans I bought at Old Navy on Saturday ($12 jean sale!!) still had the dumb square of magnetic anti-theft thing in it (the one that says "cut out before wearing) Yeah, so I beeped as I walked into all the stores today. FUN I couldn't exactly see anyone happily handing over a pair of scissors at the customer service desk so that I could use them on something inside my jeans...

3. I bought a DVD at our local "everything" store. It was Labyrinth and I couldn't resist this time. I got it home, thinking I would listen to it while I made dinner, and magically, the case was empty! LOL I did see that the side was slightly opened, but the rest of the wrap was intact and the sticker was at the top, so I figured it was just torn from boxes, shipping, stocking shelves, whatever. When I went back to the store to exchange it later in the afternoon, the clerk said that they had one stolen last night, but recovered everything, but that this must have been the one (WHAT???!!!)

4. Leaving the store from the DVD exchange, I saw that the man who had been in front of me in line, was parked next to me. He was just getting into his truck (it's Texas, everyone has a truck), so I told Allie it would be fine to get in her door quickly before he left. But, I buckled Aidan into his car seat and the man didn't leave. He got back out and set his bag of items that he had just purchased on top of the big display bags of salt (I don't know what the salt is for...water softeners maybe??) Anyway, he set the bag down on the big bags of salt and got into his truck and drove away! ?!!? So Alex and I exchanged dumbfounded expressions and laughed and wondered what on earth he was doing. I didn't think it would be too bad for Alex to check it out, so he went and looked... I figured he must have bought cigarettes for an underage person or something...nope. It was hair dye, chewing gum, and something else that a kid didn't remember, either because he didn't know what it was, or because he was too hung up on the gum. He asked if he could have the gum...of course I said no. So, we drove home and called the police to report strange and silly, but suspicious behavior. The officers showed up not long after my call to take a report...and then determined that the bag was probably gone now...yeah, that's why I told them where it was when I called, so they could go there and stake it out...um oh well.

5. How many times have I put something into the oven? I can't even begin to count. How many times have I dropped something that is supposed to be in there. Never...until now. I don't even know how it happened, but Aidan's birthday cupcakes were going in, and nope, somehow they ended up upside down on the door of the oven. So, I found myself trying to wipe up batter from a hot oven door before closing it to cook the remaining cupcakes. No injuries, but it's a fun little activity I don't recommend.

6. Yep, it was today that I would attract the wacky furniture store owner. When I got to the store (still looking for taller barstools) a car was leaving, but as I started to walk in, the man pulled back into his parking spot, and came in to the store with me. He said he was about the "go somewhere" (I know lame answer...it was lunchtime, he could have said lunch...) but he decided to come in and help me before he took off. So, leaving his Mercedes parked out in front, he proceeded to show me all the barstools he had. The first ones were fine, the next 2 awful, the last ones he showed me were an interesting little group. He said that "a lady wanted to mix and match" so he had these three that were not all the same, but if I wanted them, he could give me the group for $400...a really great deal because they are some really high quality stools. I looked in the back at the boxed up set of the first ones that I had seen, but when I went back out front and started looking at the "mixmatch set" again, he told me some other story about how this lady only needed 3 of this set of 4 of the "really high quality stainless steel ones" and I don't even remember the story of the other two. He'd give me a really good price on the 3 of them, $300! ...what??!! Did that price just go down $100 dollars in less than 5 minutes? And, since I needed 4, he would throw in the oak one in the back (which also didn't match) for free! So, I explained that I needed to go to lunch, but that I would think about it. No need to mention that what I was thinking was what a crazy he was...

So, I wouldn't say I existed in the Twilight Zone today, but some of those things just made me wonder and puzzle and laugh and wonder some more...so I thought I'd share.

The First Day of School

Allie was so excited to start her first day of school. We met her teacher last week, so she had no trouble finding her classroom and desk. A cheery goodbye and she was all set. She liked the stories and loved music time.
This morning was her second day of school, but she was a little less excited. We had to keep prompting her (read "insisting") to get moving all morning. She said she wasn't going to school today, or any day, because "it's okay, but it's just too long."
In her defense, I agree that it is too long. The Kindergartners don't get out until 2:45! That's far too long.
Of course, she enjoyed her day again today...it was "Humpty Dumpty Day" and everything was "humpty-dumpty-ish." I'm still not sure what that means.

Manic Monday: Club

I was one of the kids in High School who wanted to be in as many clubs as I could be and have my picure on the most pages of the yearbook; it's a little embarrassing to admit it, well a lot embarrassing, but I really did have fun in all of them. I loved the service that we did in Kiwanis club, reading to the Head-Start kids, recycling, even Adopt-A-Highway litter patrol was fun when it was all your friends together. I really made good friends and learned a lot on ASB (All Student Body) Drama Club, Debate Club, well, they were mostly just fun, but I truly did learn something from every one of them.
What I learned was that, even though it doesn't really matter how many pages of the yearbook that you are on, it is important to be involved in different interests and activities. I really need to use that knowledge in my life now to continue to have those good experiences. I don't want to limit myself to only one group, but sometimes I find myself doing that just because it's the easiest. But my own experience should have taught me by now that I really need to include family, friends, neighborhood, church, the kids' schools, work, community groups, sports...and really enjoy what each has to offer. I want to find that balance because it gives me fulfillment and will also open my children's eyes to more of the world around them.

Our Almost First Prize Pet

Well, we almost had a rockin' new pet. Here in our little town, we have turtle races on the 4th of July. This year, we found out that they were 1st thing in the morning and we had missed out, but we didn't have a turtle anyway, so we were just watching. Yesterday, the kids found one of the fastest turtles around that was sure to win us the race next year. They named him Lightning and tried to bring him all sorts of delicious turtle food. Unfortunately, he is not only fast, but also a mean old thing. The last bite was entirely the last straw and he was let go in the vacant lot to crawl away and find some other kids to bite.

The reason he's not worth keeping:

Look carefully...just a little nip on the tummy, but that was only the first one.

The second time, he latched on the little Aidan's finger and wouldn't let go. It's a tiny scrape, but if you can imagine a turtle dangling from Aidan's finger and not letting go and us not being able to get it off, you can imagine why, when we did, he was immediately let go in the empty lots to wander away. (Not to mention the bite on Aimee's finger, but you know, she's older...no big deal LOL) Our neighbor seemed pretty interested in scouring the lot to find him...a sure first place in next year's race. Whatever, that's fine with me.

The Memory Game...Blog style

My friend, Ashley, was playing along for one of her friends, so I decided I'd take the plunge. Everyone else can feel free to play along if you would like.

1. Leave one memory that you and I had together as a comment on this post. It doesn't matter if you know me a little or a lot, just write anything you remember!

2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you.

Loved The Vacation, Now I Need Some Sleep

We all had so much fun visiting our family and friends in Idaho and Montana. I'm always so sad to leave them to come back home, but I guess after 2 weeks, sleep does become a necessity.
After our day of airports and airplanes on the way up, we have decided that we may just drive next time and take a vacation on the way up.
We started out in Idaho. Mylie and Callie came up to spend part of the weekend in fun and chaos. All of the cousins had a blast creating fun and mischief whenever they could. Grandpa Dave's genius and elbow grease made his homemade slingshots a hit. All the boys (and even many of the girls) wanted their own to take aim with any unripe plums that had fallen to the ground.
Everyone rocked out on the kickball field, and after a quick lunch, took off to the backyard. The girls, of course, disappeared together and made berry juice and potions, and the boys stuck with their "dangerous" nature, building a fire pit in the middle of the backyard...showing resourcefulness by using the flowerbed border rocks to make the pit and old raspberry sticks arranged perfectly in the center. Unfortunately, this didn't impress the parents (well worried them, really), so the kids were quickly whisked off to the splash park to continue to run off that energy.
Saturday evening we were lucky enough to have a visit from our long-time friends, the Wilsons, who were up in Idaho for BYU education week. It was nice to reconnect and catch up with them. Totally fun!
On Sunday, we got to go to Jerimiah and Sesha's new baby's blessing. Little Matthew is completely adorable. They generously hosted everyone back at their new home. Allie was entirely impressed at their garden... "Wow, they must really love to grow vegetables." We've been so busy moving around that we haven't ever planted a garden, so she loved seeing what the vegetable looked like while they were still in the ground and on the plants.
Monday was a bit of a wash, since Alex, my mom, and I woke up during the night totally sick. It continued through Monday, so we didn't even get to enjoy Dustin's steak and chicken, so he grilled it up for himself, the girls, and dad.
Tuesday, Alex and Aimee went swimming with Brandon and Kelsey and the fun continued...4 wheeling, movies, fire pit, smores....they always have so much fun together.
On Wednesday, we had a beautiful drive over to Billings through Targhee and part of West Yellowstone for Kara and Shane's wedding. Despite the slow traffic, it was impossible to not relax and enjoy the scenery. Hazel treated the girls (Kara, Allie, Aimee, Madison, me, and herself) to pretty pre-wedding pedicures on Thursday, and on Friday, we had an awesome day of shopping. Kara was so efficient at getting every line on her list checked off that it was hard to tell that she was even stressed at all.
Saturday, of course, everyone was bustling about trying to get everything ready for the wedding. Brittany was the glamour stylist of the day and stayed busy with gorgeous updos and curling like a mad-woman.
When the moment finally arrived, Kara was absolutely glowing as she walked down the aisle to Shane, who was just as happy, although he may have seemed a little more happy once it was all finished (what can I say, he's a guy.) I hear the reception was a hit, and all the hard work totally paid off! I was in the hotel room with a slightly ill Mr Aidan, but I did get to enjoy the Backyardigans, so I can't complain, right?! We were all able to see so much of the family and visit with most of them.
We are so sorry that we couldn't make it to the party at Uncle Daryl's house the following weekend, so we invited ourselves over to Marvin and Darlene's and Daryl's new homes, both of them beautiful and designed and built by Marvin and crew. I really love that they are all so close and able to be there for all the fun milestones, games, and other events. I always feel that Daryl is so charismatic and he and Jeanne were excellent examples for their children, who are always just as wonderful as their parents. Actually after Dustin and I were married, at the first family reunion that we attended on his side of the fam, I felt so at home and welcome with Daryl and Jeanne and their stories and smiles; they totally reminded me of my own Grandma and Grandpa. So, thanks so much for the nice visit guys.
Kara and Shane had to go back to work, but they generously lent us Madison so that the kids could get in some more quality cousin time. In Helena, the kids played together endlessly, caught some grasshoppers (which was also very impressive to them), and got to play one of their favorite new games-PIT. Something about the random screaming out for your cards, trying to yell louder than the person next to you, mix up your hand trying to save what everyone's ditching, and trying to grab what you want, when you want it appeals to a wide audience.
I finally went on the boat ride up the Missouri River for the Gates of the Mountains tour. It's really nice and peaceful and our tour guide was really knowledgeable. He kept trying to throw in some humor, but it was just slight enough that it made me smile that some people were missing it. At one point he was describing how the Natives were not settled right next to the river, but were 1/4 mile away. Lewis and Clark wondered about this, but when they wrote about the mosquitos, they found out why. He said that the mosquitos bothered them so much that they "spelled the word 16 different ways, none of the way we spell it today." It was neat to float right up to the "gates" and see sort of what those early travelers saw. As you get closer to the curve, the mountains really do seem to open up and greet you.

Our tour guide let the kids steer on the way back up.

Grandma and Grandpa made sure that we visited the Carousel in downtown Helena. Aidan had already grown addicted to the ride the previous weekend, so he didn't need but a split second to realize where he was. He circled the gate looking for a way on, and when he couldn't find one, he just decided to scale the fence. We tried to lure him away after a few rides, but even ice cream can't win out the music, the animals, the turning. So, we headed out to the courtyard.
Although the residents may have had to endure the politics of it all, as a visitor, I can say the the Lewis and Clark trail information with all the fun statues and information boards is a great addition to the downtown area. The kids got to throw pennies in the stream to make a wish. Madison can seem so grown up, but then she is so funny; I think that she needed to remake her wish so...she reached right in and retossed one of hers.
On the way back down to the airport, we were able to stay in Idaho Falls for another couple of days. We played games (yay!!!) with Grandma, Grandpa, Blake, and Brecca and found out who to call when I want funky new stuff on my phone (yep, bro, that's you).

Allie LOVED picking currents in Grandma and Grandpa's backyard.

One of the "totally cool" moments for Alex and Aimee was fishing early Saturday morning...or should I say picking cattails and photographing roadkill. They did get some photos of the fish they caught, but didn't want to keep any...hmmm....Today Alex's shoes were finally dry from the mud pit he was stuck in and wore them shopping. About halfway through the day he noticed grime between his toes and muddy socks-the shoes were dry, buy not quite clean in the toes. Oh well...now he knows.

Just before we left, we were able to enjoy a visit with the Wight family at Mac's baptism in the creek at his Grandma and Grandpa's house. That was a neat experience and Mac was adorably excited. I even got to catch up with a fellow blogger and Twilight fan, my cousin, Clancy.
Of course, after tearful goodbyes throughout the weeks, we did need to come back home and hop back on the planes...aarg! We got to stop and visit with Melissa, Dillon, and little Hayden before staying the night in Salt Lake City for an early wake up. We didn't get to walk around Temple Square, but the children were impressed from the street because it really is so beautiful. They've decided that it looks like a castle. LOL

Obviously, we had so much to do, so many people to see, and everyone went out of their way to be such great hosts, hostesses, and make it easier to visit with everyone! We love you all and hope to see you soon!

Manic Monday: Wax

I am always amazed when I see some of the incredible wax sculptures that are in the wax museums. I'd love to be able to reconstruct an image like that. It's not only the features and the shapes that are perfect, but such great coloring. I will continue to be baffled. They just look so real!

(Turn down your volume at about minute 5...you can turn it back up at minute 6, but I know that most of you don't want to hear Emminem's choice phrases. Or click this link to go to the video of the wax museum in New York ... and of course, still turn down the volume at minute 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO0Sk2zdIhQ )
