Our Almost First Prize Pet

Well, we almost had a rockin' new pet. Here in our little town, we have turtle races on the 4th of July. This year, we found out that they were 1st thing in the morning and we had missed out, but we didn't have a turtle anyway, so we were just watching. Yesterday, the kids found one of the fastest turtles around that was sure to win us the race next year. They named him Lightning and tried to bring him all sorts of delicious turtle food. Unfortunately, he is not only fast, but also a mean old thing. The last bite was entirely the last straw and he was let go in the vacant lot to crawl away and find some other kids to bite.

The reason he's not worth keeping:

Look carefully...just a little nip on the tummy, but that was only the first one.

The second time, he latched on the little Aidan's finger and wouldn't let go. It's a tiny scrape, but if you can imagine a turtle dangling from Aidan's finger and not letting go and us not being able to get it off, you can imagine why, when we did, he was immediately let go in the empty lots to wander away. (Not to mention the bite on Aimee's finger, but you know, she's older...no big deal LOL) Our neighbor seemed pretty interested in scouring the lot to find him...a sure first place in next year's race. Whatever, that's fine with me.

Oh poor! What a poor little mental picture of Aidan with a turtle hanging off his finger. Cute boy!

Sorry about having to let go of your turtle race grand champion... sounds like it was for the best!

Poor little Aiden, he has such a sad frowny face. Hope his finger gets better!
