It's great to be Eight

"Aimee said when she was little, she was just like me, and that makes me mad."
"Why does that make you mad, Allie?"
"Because I love being an energetic and excited 8 year old. I never want to become a lazy teenager."

Perfectly Prounounced

We just watched Mr. Poppers Penguins today (I know, we're a little behind on the box office) and I'm pleased to share that one of my favorite parts of the movie was Mr. Popper's assisstant, Pippi. Her perfectly pronounced preference for "P" words kept me anxiously awaiting her next line. In her final scene, she walks away with a police officer, whose name is Quint, who has a particular penchant for "Q" quips. I thought it resolved quite nicely and said, "Oh good, the "P" lady gets to be with the "Q" guy."  Allie raised her eyebrows in surprise and told me, "I guess he doesn't talk much."

EDIT: It was brought to my attention that for those who haven't seen the movie, this quote might seem unclear. Basically, Pippi speaks using mostly "P" words. Sometimes this makes her sentences much shorter than what one would normally say.  For example, when someone was arriving, she said, "They are pulling up presently." So, in the case of Quint, he would have very few words in his arsenal, not because Pippi is a conversation dominating blabbery person. :D

More Powerful Than Google?!

April's theme for Primary is "Jesus Christ Restored the Fulness of the Gospel through Joseph Smith". Since the children have all heard the account of Joseph's first vision, even recently in their classes, I wasn't planning to go over it all, I planned a review worksheet that we could discuss the highlights, while focusing on the Power of God, and His omnipotence in the restoration, and the translation of the plates.
Today, we had a visitor who, of course, didn't know the history, so I ended up skipping some of my other prepared material to go over the account a little more in detail, and then got back to the translation of the plates. We had a coded message that we worked together to decode (Power of God) and read D & C 1:29
"And after having received the record of the Nephites, yea, even my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., might have power to translate through the mercy of God, by the power of God, the Book of Mormon."
I posed the question, "If the plates were written in a language that he couldn't read, how did Joseph Smith translate them into the Book of Mormon."
Without skipping a beat, and in all seriousness, Allie suggested, "He used the internet?!"

Yes, lots of laughter, including myself...

I asked if they remembered the picture or the story of him translating the plates, and she said, yes, it looked like he had a computer thing to look at. *sigh*

Referring them back to the scripture, we finally came up with the correct answer...the Power of God (which was amazingly the same message that we translated on the board...imagine that! lol )

Can you tell we Google a lot at our house?

The Olden Days

The beautiful thing about summer is that it's so easy to abandon plans and form new ones. Everything works out. Today, we had initially planned to head over to the library for movie day. The Tale of Depspereax was showing and as we have yet to see it, it sounded like an okay plan. Our friends, however, were going to check out the city pool, so we abandoned the library for some swim time.

Surprisingly, our city pool is open from 1-6. That's it...no two hour swim sessions. You pay at 1:00, you can stay until 6:00. We got there at 2:15, even though we told Blossom, Grace, and Sarah (our swimming buddies for the day) that we'd be there around 1:30. Better yet, Alex and Allie were first out of the car and as I unbuckled Aidan, Alex ran back to the car.

"Hey, mom. I just saw this guy with a whole stack of towels on his head; did you bring towels?"

Ummm...well....you see...

Of all the things to forget on the way to the pool, one might not think it would be the towels. But, since we were already there and very late to meet our friends, I decided against heading back home. While walking up to the pool, Alex and Allie had the following conversation.

Allie: What are we going to do then?
Alex: I guess just dry like they did in the olden days, just lay in the sun.
Allie: Oh, yeah, I guess they didn't have towels in the old-fashioned days. Wait, they didn't have water in the old days either, so it didn't matter if they had towels.

Since only laughter followed, the conversation ended.

Lucky for us, our friend had an extra towel and there was plenty of sun and warm sidewalk. (Also warm mommies that didn't get fully wet to cuddle up against.)
