Manic Monday: Shopping

I have to admit...I love shopping. Until I moved so far away from the mall, I wouldn't have admitted my small addiction. But honestly, this past year everyone in my house has had a significant change in wardrobe. I'm not able to pop over to the mall to cruise the sales racks on a regular basis...or even walk the mall. I don't get to put a few things on hold and come back the next day after I've checked out prices and choices elsewhere. I still manage to get it in sometimes, but not as often as I'd like.

Last Christmas, I ended up doing the majority of the gift shopping online. This actually works out well because I usually find that whatever I want at the store is gone. I like the prices online and the availabilty. I still want the store experience for some of the fun, but for holiday shopping, online can't be beat!

So...do you like holiday shopping? Do you like shopping at other times of the year better or not as much? Are you a fan of the online?

As always, you can find more blog chat about "shopping" over at Mo's Manic Monday!

A Prayer For Mumbai

As we celebrated Thanksgiving here, with a hiatus from TV and internet, I was not up to date as I usually am with US and world news. My heart goes out to the victim's families and all those in India who have been affected by this act of terrorism.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I baked pies yesterday to free up the oven for the turkey today. It's rubbed down and waiting to go in. I'm taking a break before the busyness begins.

Although I'm not near all the people that I want to be today, I'm feeling totally blessed and completely thankful. Parents, sibling, in-laws, husband, children, home, freedom, religion, peace, happiness, good food, good company, friends, work, play, love, books, technology, health, strength, thoughts, feelings, country, rain, sun...

I could go on and on. I'm truly blessed. I love you all and wish you a very blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Turkey Day

In this case, I can say that, because it's not actually Thanksgiving, and I have a turkey to share.
This is Allie's creation. We were told to work together (child and parent) to decorate the turkey. Some children filled it with marshmellows or m&m's. Allie was sure she wanted buttons, ribbons and pipecleaners to be a part of it, so...this is what she came up with. She LOVED gluing on the spices and herbs and really enjoyed the chaos of her ribbon collage!

Manic Monday: Harvest

1. We had a pretty good sized garden when I was growing up. I don't have one right now, but I still love fresh produce from the garden. Of course, when the summer came to an end, we had to be sure to get everything we wanted picked and inside before the frost. I remember one year we had tomatoes lined up on newspapers downstairs in our basement. Maybe it was an early frost, maybe it was a shorter growing season, but there they were, ripening and waiting to be made into salsa. My mom even bought tiny salt shakers so that we could eat tomatoes ... we snacked on them with or without salt. Yum!

2. I grew up in an agricultural area, so there were lots of farms around. The only farming experience I have is one year our friend (a farmer) opened up the fields so we could "glean" them, or pick up all the potatoes that had been left behind. I remember it took a long time and I didn't even do much work. Thanks mom and dad for all the yummy potatoes and your hard work!

3. The Law of the Harvest: You Reap What You Sow. If you plant an apple seed, you won't be harvesting peaches.
I look at my job as a mother, and the seed that I plant for my children. Even when we don't think that our kids are watching and even when we don't think we are making a difference, they are watching and they are learning.
This is sometimes easier to observe in someone else's kids, rather than your own. You see the mannerisms that they pick up from their parents, the way that they speak, they way that they walk and talk. Of course our children have their own spirits, their own personalities, their own independence, defiance, and ideas, but as parents, we have a few years to help them develop into the best people they can be.
That job, as a cultivator and nurturer, giving my children the proper seeds planted in their minds and a lot of hard work to get them to grow properly, until they start to decide which ones to cultivate on their own, is something I try to keep a top priority. And hopefully, I don't trim the wrong branches or allow the wrong one to keep growning. I hope I can give them support when they need it and not too much support when they don't, so that they can grow tall and strong.
It's hard work and I love it.

Alright so...country isn't usually my top choice of music, but I love this song and it fits perfectly!

Another Run In With The Clothes Patrol?

Alex just informed me that since tomorrow is a half day (they get out at 12) and the last day before the Thanksgiving break, they are having a Pajama day at school. Everyone can wear their Pajama bottoms....or if they don't have them, they get to have an "untucked shirt" day. Well...as Alex sleeps in his basketball shorts, he thinks he should wear them tomorrow.

They are just asking for trouble!!!

Oh boy! I guess I better go to bed early tonight to be well rested for my visit with the administrators?

Manic Monday: Season

"Season" Graphic courtesy of Jannagraphics.

"Because We Don't All Get A Second Chance"

Winter, its biting cold and piercing wind, was finally at an end. The sun, not yet persuasive enough to encourage the grass and flowers, felt warm and safe, thawing my core. As I stretched and reached, I felt strong. I could tell that I had grown, in both body and spirit. The season of rest had awakened within me the desire to stand firm and not be affected by the changes of the world. It was to be my year, my season to shine.
I worked more than I ever had and earlier than in the past, earlier than those around me. I welcomed the sun; I absorbed all that she was willing to give; still she left me yearning for her touch. At the end of the day, she fled, to grant me time to build. I spent these hours enriching my self from the earth; all that she offered me was never enough.

But it was. They both held knowledge beyond my own., and with their help, I had achieved the first part of my goal.

That spring, my buds were the first to arrive and I was the star that I had dreamed. I stood proud when I heard how beautiful I was and my spirit soared to know the pleasure that I gave them. The joy and elation that the sun had rained upon me in those early days exploded deep inside and I was pleased to be the benefactor now.

When the others joined me in their show of color, I was already green, and so continued to reap the attention I so needed.

The days became warmer and then hot; my beauty provided peace and comfort. I continued to draw nourishment from the sun and the earth until, as always, I felt autumn approaching. The others still appeared vivid and fresh, but in my haste to shake off winter's frigid coat of white, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the spring. I forgot to notice the small changes in the earth as it basked in the new warmth. I forgot to savor the sensation of every part of me strengthening from the nutrients of the earth. I forgot what it felt like to breath the scent of newness and freshness that covers the earth. In my eagerness, I became singulary-focused and lost sight of the big picture.

I froze in my growth. I would stop it all. I refused to succumb to the call of autumn. Although I enjoyed the new change and colors, I wasn't ready to let go of summer; I held onto her warmth. I held onto the season that I had missed. I ignored the crispness, gave no attention to the earth as she changed her offering and prepared herself for the coming days. I hadn't gotten my summer; I would take it now.

I stood strong and green while the others changed. I mocked them for their weakness in allowing the seasons to change them at will. My will was stronger, my determination set. I would enjoy the moments I had missed.

The day of the frost proved that even my strength and resolve was no match for nature. In my resistance, I once again missed out. I lost the beauty of autumn. The time to change had passed and I was now bare like the rest of them...without the colors that I so loved. I grieved for my loss and for my naiveness.

Yes, the sun and earth held knowledge beyond my own.

I was too busy being what I thought I should be to enjoy just being me.

I will ever more immerse myself in the uniqueness of each season. I will savor. I will bask. I will see. I will breath life.

Sent Home For School Costume

I thought this article was interesting, given my gripe a few posts back about our own Halloween costume chaos. This boy in NJ was sent home from school for dressing up as Jesus Christ. In our case, he would have been in On Campus Supension for the long hair, but I'm pretty sure the Jesus costume would have been a more accepted choice than shorts.

Manic Monday: Colorful

Better late than never. I didn't get my collage of colorful stuff together, so I'm doing something else colorful. Fun. Although I can't say I'd like to live in that house, or on that street.

Nope, That's Not My Card

A few months ago we learned a couple of silly fun card tricks. Some of you may have had the pleasure of experiencing the kids' "psychic" abilities when they magically revealed your card.

Today, Aimee wanted to amaze her friend and prove to her that they both had a sixth sense. Unfortunately, this girl couldn't, for the life of her, remember her card. So, at the end of each trick, despite being performed correctly, she insisted that that was NOT her card.

I also decided to lend a hand and perform the magic, with the same results. We were finally able to have fun with it and be "astounded" when somebody, Allie, Aimee, or I, teamed up with her to remember the card.

It sort of takes the fun out of the trick. LOL

Dona Nobis Pacem

Peace can only start on the individual level. We each have to be the kind of person that we want others to be. We need to be involved and let others feel our light.
One of the new programs that can be taught in schools is Character Counts. It is one small step to empowering children to be the kind of people that can help make a difference in our world.

Make Your Voice Heard

If you need a better reason than making your voice heard, becoming a statistic in what is likely to be a huge voter turnout, or just want a bonus for speaking your mind....

Halloween and Halloween Andrews style

As you know, we enjoyed trick-or-treating on Thurdsay night to be sure that our schedules were clear for the High School Football game on Friday night. We went to a company Halloween party last week and took these pictures.

(With Allie's friend in this one)

On Halloween (well, trick-or-treating night), Aimee decided to be a little less angelic. Alex had his football game, so he didn't go trick-or-treating...well, he probably wouldn't have anyway.

As you can see, another great American was so impressed by our devotion to football down here, he joined us at the game!

Of course, the main reason I was there, was to see my little cuties cheering!

Nuttin But Strings...Awesome!

We loved these guys on America's got Talent and they have a performance on one of our favorite shows on Noggin (the kid's shows) They totally rock!!

Halloween at School...hmmm***

At their middle school this year, the kids were allowed to wear costumes on Halloween, as long as it was "historical." Okay call me crazy, but this sounds like a lot of kids are going to be taking that guideline pretty lightly. The guys are also allowed to wear shorts as long as it is part of their costume (girls are always allowed shorts, but guys can normally only wear them on designated "wear shorts" days).

When Alex came out of his room to eat breakfast, dressed, hair done, etc, he was wearing shorts. Both Dustin and I questioned him about it and he said he was "myself two years ago, before I moved here where they make us wear pants. I always wore shorts, every day to school, so that's historical." Alright, I thought it was cute and clever and on a day where I assumed a lot of kids were going to get away with a lot of costumes that were probably not all that historical, we let it fly. I did tell him to get his favorite pair of jeans ready because if he had to call me to bring him long pants, I didn't want to bring "the wrong ones."

Aimee cleared her costume with her teacher ahead of time. She was dressed as an angel. Yep historic. So, after helping Aimee with her hair and makeup (gold glittery stuff), we took off for school, but with the extra stuff going on, I forgot my cell phone.

I dropped the middle schoolers off and then went to take Allie to Kindergarten, which starts a few minutes later. By the time I got home, I had a missed call, both at home and on my cell. I returned the number; it was, of course, the middle school. Alex was asking for pants so that he wouldn't have to go to OCS (on campus suspension.) On the way over, I called Dustin to tell him what was up; he already knew because since Alex couldn't reach me, he had to call his dad at work. He agreed that we should talk a little about it with the principal, but not make a huge deal about it.

When I got to school, Alex was already sitting in a chair in the office, and the principal, Mrs. Bane, was sitting next to him, speaking calmly. I gave him the jeans and he went to change. Mrs Bane made small talk about the pajama-clad, binky-mouthed child in my arms, but then went to attend to someone in the back of the office. As I wanted to ask Alex about his conversation with her before I spoke to her, this was fine with me.

When he came out, now in his school-approved clothing, I asked Alex what she had said to him. He just gave a brief answer about not wearing shorts at shool. I asked if he told her it WAS a costume. He said no, he didn't really have a chance. He said that his homeroom teacher had called him on the shorts, Alex did tell him his costume, and the teacher smiled, but told him he should go down and ask the principal if it was okay. So, I asked the secretary if I could talk to the principal.

The assistant principal, Mrs Wilkerson, met us and showed us to her office (she was dressed as a hippie). I explained that Alex felt like his costume was good, and although it wasn't showy, it was what he considered a part of history. He had already changed, and I did mention that I didn't want to make him change again, but I did think that he should have been able to be heard on the whole subject. Mrs Wilkerson also smiled at the costume, and excused herself to go speak to the principal, although she did not bring her in. When she returned, she said that, yes, shorts were okay if they were part of a costume, but it had to be a more "costumed" costume.

Huh?

Alright, if I had all the information at that point, I would not have let it go. Perhaps if I had had more sleep the previous night and had eaten breakfast I would have also pressed the issue a bit more. But, since I was tired and hungry, I didn't want to cry for no reason...so, I let it go at that.

As I left the school, I saw some questionable costumes and of course we had a full report of the other "historical" costumes: hippies (lots), Barbie, mice, cats, Snow White, Superman, babies, football players, pumpkins, soldiers, cowboys, cowgirls, dolls, brides, and a greek goddess or two. Alright, so to me, some of those clearly miss the mark. The principal was dressed as Fred Flinstone (she's a girl.)

I totally lost my adult composure and just started griping. (Good example from the mother...whatever...it really annoyed me.) I couldn't believe that they would allow some of the costumes that weren't really historical, but would make Alex change, when his was clearly a significant part of his own history (seriously this is big at his age and to his feelings). What made me the most upset was that Alex missed his entire math period sitting in the office waiting for me to bring him "appropriate" clothing when he was already wearing appropriate clothing.

Then, I got more of the story. Alex said he didn't tell me because he knew that I would have been more upset when I was talking to the principal (or vice) and didn't want to feel bad that I cried...blah blah blah...he knows me too well. LOL

The reason that Alex didn't tell the principal what his costume was, is that the moment he walked into the office, the secretary griped at him. He mentioned why he was there, and she laughed, unemotionally, a spoken, "hahaha" and said, "go call your mom"." When he didn't reach me, he asked if she could get Dustin's work number from his file, and she said, something to the effect of, "I guess, or maybe you can just sit your butt down in OCS"

Okay, call me a protective, witchy mom, but I really thought her attitude was out of line. If I had known all of that, I would have said something to her, and maybe mentioned that in my conversation with Mrs Wilkerson. The secretary had just already upset Alex and I guess he needs more experience speaking his feelings and his own point of view and not feeling intimidated.

So, my feeling now, is that I'm probably going to let it go. I am definitely still mad about it all, but unless he gets a zero for the day in his math class, I'm not going to be going in to gripe at them. I'll be selective in my battles.

Arg to the unfair dress code; it's very favoritive to girls....and I'm not biased...my girl goes there too, and I raise my eyebrows at the things they allow those girls to get away with...but of course not the boys.
Arg to holier-than-thou secretaries.
Arg to the discretion of the office, when every employee in the office is female.
Mostly arg to me for not teaching Alex to be a little more self-confident in the presence of intimidating school personel. He felt comfortable talking to his teacher, but definitely not to the lady that treated him like "middle school riff raff". Hopefully, that will come with parent guidance and time and experience.

So...what would you have done?
What are your thoughts?
If you just want to comment with "That's really lame" That's totally awesome too!

***Alright, this post ended up being incredibly long and crazy and after writing it all out, I should most definitely posted this on "Trash Talk Tuesday" Oh well.
