Pickles

The crazy pickle obsession really should have gone with yesterday's post, as it is most definitely "way wacky." However, I had mentioned the pickle phenomenon in a separate post and promised more info and pics would be coming.
Check it out.

These particular pickles were purchased at the swimming pool snack bar and came in their own individual sealed plastic pouch. The nutrition facts indicated that there were actually 5 servings per container, and if someone ate 1/5 of the pickle, that someone would have 0 calories 0g fat 0g protein (although the 1g carb gives 4 calories, I think nutrition labels aren't required to list calories under 5) but 390mg of sodium. So, even if you shared it with 1 other person, you'd get 1000mg of sodium. Wow. (In most cases, they are just sold out of huge jars and served in a napkin...yeah, it doesn't work well in a public setting.)
The crazy thing to me is that EVERYONE eats these things. They are sold at the movie theater snack bar, at football games, in the school cafeteria, at ever snack kiosk at the mall, and of course, at library story time. Some parents/children even brought these giant pickles as a team snack for after the basketball games. I was completely surprised to go to the library and see a whole 20-child preschool class all holding these things. Thankfully, most of them end up throwing them away half-way through. Since I hadn't managed to discreetly snap a pic at the library, I gave in at the pool and let the children have one...for the sake of the picture. I insisted on lots of water and lots of sharing.
Funny story...as strange as I think the pickle fanaticism is, I have a friend who grew up down here and thought it was the oddest thing that, while living in away from here for their last job, they were unable to buy a pickle at the baseball game or movie theater. They had come to think this was the norm, and thought that the other people were the crazy ones.
I guess it all depends on personal experience and perspective.

Acquired Tastes...Just makes me want some frysauce to go with my fries now. (which I am sure if I ever look at the nutritional facts it would make no sense on why I am dipping my already saturated fat potato into more fat along with other non essential calorie loaded hogwash)
